The kampMATE wood-burning stove was born out of the mind of our late father. Nearly 40 years ago, he designed and manufactured the first WoodFlame wood-burning stove, which was the first of its kind and quickly gained traction during a time when open campfires were not allowed in the wilderness and backcountry. The stove's design and utility function were patented, marking the beginning of the WoodFlame Stove's legacy.

As the patent was expiring, we decided to retool and create a new version of a backpacking stove, which we patented for the modern backpacker. This stove, called the Folding Firebox, is truly the Swiss Army Knife of backpacking stoves. After selling our interest in that company years ago, we decided to re-enter the market with a stove that is closer to the original WoodFlame stove in both size and design, but with a few upgrades. Today, nearly 40 years later, we have the modern version of the WoodFlame Stove that is sturdy, lightweight, and extremely functional at a very low cost.

Countless memories were made camping with the original WoodFlame Stove, including boiling water and cooking fish at Granddaddy Lake in the High Uinta Mountains of Utah, and cooking meals while hiking all over the Uintas. Unfortunately, we only have a handful of these original stoves left, as our father had about five different sizes made.

Keeping with the same basic principles of the original WoodFlame Stove, we've improved the ease of assembly, reinforced the side plates with embossing, created larger air ventilation on the sides and bottom tray, and added cross bars to the top to accommodate smaller cups and pots. The stove is still foldable, but now even thinner, making it virtually undetectable in your pack.

Each kampMATE WoodFlame Stove comes with its own nylon carry case to keep it safely in one place and prevent your other gear from getting dirty. We recommend wiping each plate off in the dirt or grass before putting it back into the case, as a little bit of dirt can do wonders in cleaning the stove after each use.
